Djembe Workshop at Bali Hai in Manila 2012

With my 4 kidz here in Manila with me tomorrow, I'd let them meet and greet, not those cartoon characters nor see the fireworks display and Holiday lights at the Mall grounds, but, jam with other band of brothers, perhaps their soon to be mentors and masters.

There is a superb event and I hope to tag my kids along. It's The Intensive Djembe Workshop. This is open to all drummers, enthusiasts, players and musicians tomorrow, 28th December 2012 from 10am until 6pm at Bali Hai Garden Restaurant on 37 Visayas Avenue, Quezon City. (That's where we usually gather for Jayson Dyandi, Tapati and Co.'s Luna Festival)

They say that the workshop will ignite us to learn the basics from Josh Tabije and the rest of the gang. Josh, FYI , has been playing the drums since 2003. Shortly after, he was blessed to have his first few djembe classes and he was exposed to the mastery of Mamady Keita. Josh then felt that the djembe would become a major part of his life. True enough, to its fruition, he was able to work closely with some of the pre-eminent djembefola from Africa like that of Moussa Bolokada Conde and Famoudou Konate. He also worked with Fode Seydou Bangoura and a number of Master African dance teachers in the US. Josh is visiting us like Kit Perez and Galih Naga Seno (an Indonesian djembe maker and player for 12 years and who hails from a family of prominent Indonesian artists. And with the Manila-based "drum advocates" who, too, are masters in their own rights - Jayson Dyandi (percussionist, djembe maker, didjeroo player)and ,Levi Azarcon (drummer and student of Ma'am Ligaya Amilbangsa of the Pangalay Artist Circle - I call them the caretakers and advocates of the Tausug's Pangalay), to name a few, let's start to learn the basics from them, have fun playing and do improvisations with the exhilarating rhythms of a djembe! Peace!

One thing I admire about this batch of djembe artists is that, they too, promote, build and create djembes. It was through Tambulan and drumming circles where I met them and somehow, they, indeed, taught us, unified and empowered a mixed level community class, may it be a private or a small group lesson. Josh for one has performed all over the US and Guinea, West Africa and has assisted workshops for the Masters Mamady Keita and Bolokada Conde . Gimme some beat!

Tara! Let's join the workshop tomorrow or you may contact Ryan Sandagan, Jayson Dyandi or Levi Azarcon through their Facebook Accounts. They also created a website where you can register and it is at:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/embeddedform?formkey=dFBsamhGckJSVVdMYkVfdmJKYVlNdEE6MQ

The Fair Energy Exchange is set at PHP1,200 with free food from Bali Hai's cuisine or PHP1,000 if it's justfor the workshop only and other BYO's. Hmmm, how would my set up be with my four kids? Bathala nawa.

Btw, for those who don't have or can't bring their djembes, DYANDI PERCUSSION is offering djembe rentals at PHP300.

Also, you might want to stay tuned to Sabi ni Lourd at 92.3FM tomorrow for the ON AIR interview, jam and etc. of these few good djembefolas around 1900-2000hr.

As what I always utter, tugudung tsak tsak, tsing! Palo!

Kosi in Manila 2012

When I volunteered for OHM Talks this Dec 1-2, great opportunities and abundance has been happening lately to me. I've finally realized and emitted that grey mist from my heart through a holistic MD friend. I was uncertain on so many things the past week , but that Sunday, during OHM's closing performance, I've affirmed above anything else, being a Mother, a daughter and a friend is my core purpose. I've finally learned to let go of all the things I'm reclaiming. No need for 10 years to process each want. Some needs must be resolved. I felt stronger and more equipped to give back to the immediate people tied up with me - my very own umbilical cord and navel.

Another letting go and moving forward adventure would be to finally take in, receive and know what Satsang is. It is through Kosi, a globally recognized spiritual teacher and author and who has been a student of Gangaji since 2001, that I may be able to do so. (To know more about Kosi, please visit her page: http://www.kosi.co/index.php/who-is-kosi/kosi)

"Since I am new to the Philippines I don't really know how many people will be interested in satsang; it is always a great mystery who has a deep desire to be Free---to end their suffering" - Kosi

We meet in the sacred space of Satsang to discover what is free of suffering, free of our circumstances, and even free of ideas of freedom, enlightenment, or states of consciousness. In this meeting of the Heart you can discover directly, intimately, the happiness, fulfillment, and freedom of your inherent nature. The purpose of satsang and all meetings that Kosi offers, is to stop your mind and offer you and opportunity to end your suffering.

To support Kosi in her travels and mission, we humbly ask for donations or any energy exchange for those attending the Satsang.

Here is Kosi's meeting schedule:

OHM Talks 2012

OHM what?

" OM" is a resonating chant, one mystical sound used while meditating for a Greater and Higher plane. It is a mantra which helps one re-focus while being aware of our breathing. In Baybayin the character also stands for "O". This aum syllable is widely used in Hinduism yet majority will be more familiar with it seeing on some cabs in Metro Manila.

But what we will be having on Dec 1 and 2 at the Elements, ETON Centris in Quezon Avenue in Quezon City is OHM - catchy and sounds like it, which stands for Occupy your Higher Mind.

OHM Talks was patterned from TED talks seen in You Tube. But the difference is, ours will be about spirituality and the emerging awareness which was then coined as "New Age" or "Cosmic" stuff. It is a two-day convergence for holistic wellness which we consider a series of powerful and life-changing experience, revealing a new perspective in the world of business and the world of spirit. While we are happy to receive donations when we open the doors from 10am till 8pm, this is free admission.

We have invited international resource speakers Pheonyx Roldan Smith of The Spirit Science network and OGCproject. KOSI, a spiritual teacher and student of world-renowned yoga master, Ganganji is now in town. Other Speakers will come from the group of holistic healers, transformative educators, social entrepreneurs, seasoned cultural enthusiasts, as well as pioneers of secular and interfaith advocates.

OHM TOPICS will be:
• Agnihotra - A quantum Approach for our Current Earth and Human Challenges
• Life Balance
• The AEIOU's of Peace
• Sacred Spaces
• The Role of Being Gay in Today's Spirituality
• Women Energy and Empowerment: The Rise of the Feminine
• Basic ESP: A Continuing Personal Experience
• Dreams and Synchronicity
• ILAW SA HILAW: Light in Raw Living Food
• Philippine Energy Centers
• Graphology: Your Signature, Your Life
• Intuition to Inspiration
• Developing Equanimity: Practical Mental, Emotional and Physical Detoxification Recipes
• Healing Words and Music
• Meditation as a Way to Optimize Human Potential
• ... and many more

There will also be Opening and Closing Rituals , Gratitude Dance and my favorite part, a 2 night of Open Jam and Communal performances.

Through friends and partner communities, this was made possible by Circle Eight Events Services. You can contact them and still do booth reservations through 4164933 or email events.marketingteam@gmail.com

Namaste!

GINHAWA

Bahay Ginhawa will hold a series of workshops this November and while a friend saw that November was spelled Nove-Me-ber, it got us all thinking that hey maybe, it was the magical power of words that suggested it really.

When November strikes with All Saints and All Souls Day, I see it as a great beginning to not just spend time for remembering the spirits that have come ans shared us earth, but also for taking time to reflect on our own. This is the moment for acknowledging the sufferings, triumph and the living .

I may not be 100% present in all the activities, but because I so love Ginhawa and the people behind the foundation, this is my way to invitee you and your circle to come and join . You may Contact Ishilta with the mobile numbers posted.

Oh another reflection would be is that, Ginhawa Inc., has been so kind to me, helping and guiding me for the past months of my self-journey. I could not agree more that NOvember has "me" now = introspecting NOve-ME-Ber ,baby!

KM1: What Remains, What Disappears: A Worthy Fieldtrip!

Yesterday was the field trip of my nephew in primary school. Their itinerary was the usual- Laguna areas most especially that bread factory. I hope I could bring back the old scheme of fieldtrips- Rizal Shrine, Tandang Sora Shrine, Quezon Memorial Circle, Intramuros, Bahay Nakpil, Museo Pambata, Planetarium add manila Ocean park and all of our other historical/educational sites so that the fee will not be as much as Php 1700.00. there are many better sites than being outside the Metro. Fieldtrips needs to be more "cultural" than bore the kids onlong bus rides, don't you think?

I also went into a fieldtrip as my day was closing. My friend invited me to go to the Fort for an event by the French Embassy last night. Little did I know that this was not the one in Taguig. It was the real FORT! An event by the Alliance Française de Manille and Rustan’s together with the Musée Nicéphore Nièpce, the Quezon City government and the Intramuros Administration in Fort Santiago!

Approaching the gate, the guwardiya sibil asked for our invitates. My friend said " Boss, we wouldn't spend a cab fare if we're not invited!" And so, the guard on duty just asked for our names and said they sound familiar.
Why go to KM 1?

This end of October 2012 is the second installment in a series of photo and video exhibits through Kilometer 1 or KM 1. From last year’s Kilometer Zero or KM 0, the artists’ works were displayed in various public spaces here in the metro such as my Quezon Memorial Circle(QMC), Fort Santiago, and the Metropolitan Museum.

In QMC, large photos on tarpaulins features the works of Filipina photographer MM Yu and French photographer Léa Eouzan which will be displayed throughout the park for an entire October. Léa’s work focuses on what she researched even from the National Archives on the perception of space through memorial and historical sites while MM Yu showcases her best pieces which she said "ironic landscapes presented through ordinary objects". Right on girls! They both have the eyes to see beyond and create that certain beauty and appreciation from untold stories from common things. they were able to convey and be storytellers but leaves the audience to reflect and search that impact.

I was lucky to have a chat with director, teacher, writer, Visayan artist Manny Montelibano who created the audiovisual installation projecting Pinoy optimism at Rajah Sulayman in Intramuros (Fort Santiago). Through this project, he felt closer to our very own national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Manny has been in all smiles even being interviewed. this was how happy he was all throughout the night. And he was very calm and confident that heavy rains may come to the location , but his installation will just be fine- precisely the message he wants to convey about Pinoy's positivity. Another positive impact is that, through this art exhibit, The French Embassy has been able to work closely with the Intramuros Administration on debut. Win- Win!

KM1 created more than Pinoy awareness but a friendship and a dialogue between Filipino and French artists. This also proved that beyond conventional photo exhibit and artworks, it was able to bring art to the people and that the audience, may discover and feel the images outside regular artistic venues.

Kilometer One is part of the French-Philippine cultural season coined as FrancoPhil 2012, with the support of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and Pernod Ricard Philippines, FrancoPhil’s official hotel partner, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and official media partners Business World and High Life.

How I wish it was seen by their Prime Minister while he visited us lately. Please look at the image to know how long will their runs be at each location.

For more information, please contact Astrid Renoux, Cultural Attaché of the French Embassy in Manila at (02) 857 69 35 or astrid.renoux@diplomatie.gouv.fr.

Qui-Ling and Troy Silvestre

Tonight is the opening of Troy Silvestre's Art Exhibit at 1951 in Malate Manila called Qui-Ling...Guiding Force. Sir Troy and I would chat with Francis about Paco, Sound Art , Life, Learnings and other stuff at Kanto in The Collective but I have yet to see his artworks in 1951 (formerly Penguin. Congrats and Namaste bro!

The Bar @ 1951 is not physically the location of the former Penguin Bar (because Penguin used to be at the corner near Remedios Circle)but I assure you it's BACK to its pristine days. The Bar @ 1951 is the 2 story Gallery now situated at 1951 Adriatico St, Malate Manila with its same great kindred and crowd!

The mixed media exhibit will run until November 3 2012. For more info, you may contact 0915 2280.6214

Bleu Rascals Tonight at Rue Bourbon Salcedo Makati

"Bleus what? Rue where? " These were the immediate questions I got from friends I've just invited while rendering my overtime at the office.

It's just a 5 minute walk from her office and just as I blog about it tonight, it is the first tour with dates from 16th at Rue Bourbon Salcedo,22nd in Eastwood and 23rd on Fort Bonifacio branch.

The Band of Brothers

Bleu Rascals is a "brotherhood" composed of Vocalist and guitarist Paul Marney Leobrera,Centro Escolar University; bass guitarist Spencer Carlyle Rymonte, 18, New Era University; drummer Darwin John Quinto,Trinity University of Asia.
These young talented college students and musicians are enjoyingtheir music not just because they were exposed to John mayer nor eric Clapton but because they are a "band" in the true sense of teh word. They were even part of the “The Story of Jazz: 1st CCP International Jazz Festival 2011” at the Cultural Center of the Philippines last year where they performed “Blues Night” on Aug. 24. This was our discussion while at Direk Marilou Diaz Abaya's wake in Ateneo on Friday. Serendipity or fate perhaps , but hey, maybe there is a reason why I need to see these kids tonight! Thanks to my boss and my guitarist/artist friend, I will be able to see and hear these kids pour their heart and soul out . Afterall, this is what "blues" is all about!

Catch and join us tonight at Rue Bourbon (Salcedo) G/F Aguirre Bldg. 108 H.V Dela Costa Cor Tordesillas St.Salcedo Village, MakatiCity or call their landline: 02-5534216 and Mobile: 0922-456-9992. Entrance is free and yes, for the alcoholic drinkers, 50% on all Local beers!

Takits!

Estero Tour for Bloggers by ABS CBN Foundation Inc.

What is a Blogger?

A blogger is a writer on the Internet cloud who maintains a “blog” or a web log for discussion and as an informal site. The entries or “posts” are according to a chronological order like an online diary, journal, record of some kind. Having a niche or a target market , bloggers act as producers, writers, reporters and publicists to be able to add to the contents and posts and also create a social relation with the viewers, readers and members.

Most blogs are commentary on topics close and personal to them. Some are online diaries yet others acts as reviewers for a particular brand, product or even company. Some focus on special interests like gadgets , auto reviews, art, photography, videos, films, music, and the latest are podcasts for audio ones. Short posts are called microblogging. There are also edubloggers as instructional references. Bottomline is, a blogger has the ability to create her own identity and has the direct control in maintaining her blog for personal or commercial reasons.

I saw a very interesting post in Facebook by ABS CBN Foundation’s Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig . They made a very catchy call for bloggers. I immediately called my blogger friends to join because it is for a very worthy cause- a Bloggers Estero Tour on Sept 25 2012 from 9am to 1pm hosted by Casa Bocobo Hotel in Ermita, Manila. They will be screened and will be emailed to experience a walking tour tasked to blog about the Great Change done in Estero de Paco and Estero de San Miguel . All these to disseminate information and support the cleaning up and bringing back the pristine beauty of the Mutya, The Pasig River.

You too might want to join. First 20 bloggers must comment on their FB link by putting their live blog and its url. Signing up is until September 19 2012 . And maybe, just maybe, you can get up close and personal to Ms. Gina Lopez and share this experience with all her visionary gifts and energy.

I am one proud blogger and this will allow me to reconnect indeed!

ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL AT SHANG CINEPLEX!

I am in LOVE with International Film Festivals. My love for it started when I used to sleep over at UPFI. Now as an alumna, I mark my calendar and always make sure that I can go back to UPFI to watch Film Fests.

Oh, by the way, there is a "pattern" for this. A festival starts somewhere in Makati or Mandaluyong then last tour will be at Diliman-my Mecca!. That is why I have never missed a festival. It comes to me closer from home.Although I have always been grateful to Shang Cineplex in Shaw. Another strategy is, fall in line 2 or an hour before the schedule even if it abruptly changes based on whatever reasons they never disclosed! But I know why, since I used to be an organizer for Direk T.Aguiluz' Cinemanila!

I was aware of the Asian Film Festival, organized by Asia Society Philippine Foundation Inc., which started this May 17 till today. I intended not to go TONIGHT because of another event but , let's see how I can manage my Monday! The first time films from other parts of Asia are Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, together with local faves Korea and Japan.

Dinig Sana Kita is our country's entry and a big opener this 17th. This is a DRAMA drama and a one-of-a-kind LOVE STORY between a deaf boy and a troubled rocker girl. AHEM!

Another entry is Halaw. It is a narrative adventure of an illiterate Badjao and his daughter as they illegally cross the border of Malaysia and Philippines.

Days have passed but hey, here is the schedule of the free screenings of all these films at the Shang Cineplex in Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong, from May 17 to 21, 2012 as;

May 17 Thursday

Philippines: Dinig Sana Kita (8PM)
Running time: 88 minutes

May 18 Friday

Indonesia: 3 DOA 3 CINTA (12:30PM)
Running time: 114 minutes)

Vietnam: The Guava House (3PM)
Running time: 100 minutes

Laos: Only Love (5:30PM)
Running time: 125 minutes

China: Forever Enthralled (8PM)
Running time: 138 minutes

May 19 Saturday

Sri Lanka: Agni Dahaya (12:30PM)
Running time: 119 minutes

Indonesia: Laskar Pelangi (3PM)
Running time: 125 minutes

Japan: Wanko - The Story of Me, My Family, and My Dog (5:30PM)
Running time: 123 minutes

Korea: Hwang Jin Yi (8PM)
Running time: 141 minutes

May 20 Sunday

Vietnam: Nostalgia for Countryland (12:30PM)
Running time: 116 minutes

Japan: Eclair (3PM)
Running time: 107 minutes

Korea: Speedy Scandal (5:30PM)
Running time: 108 minutes

China: The Founding of a Republic (8PM)
Running time: 140 minutes

so for TODAY, May 21 Monday, they say RELAX and watch a movie. Not for me, I'd RUN to SHANG from Manila for aone GREAT Badjao story... (If only I could go back biking . grrrr!)

China: Glittering Day (12:30PM)
Running time: 95 minutes

Sri Lanka: Deewari (3PM)
Running time: 124 minutes

Indonesia: Jakarta Maghrib (5:30PM)
Running time: 72 minutes

Philippines: Halaw (8PM)
Running time: 75 minutes

Tara!

Who is he?

He is Samaon Sulaiman,"Manlilikha ng Bayan" (National Living Treasure), conferred in 1993 for keeping the traditional Maguindanao kutyapi music against all threats of modernity. He is one MASTER FOLK ARTIST in accordance with Republic Act No. 7355. And he indeed dedicated his skills "to nourish traditional crafts threatened by extinction."

Manlilikha ng Bayan Samaon Sulaiman, master of the Maguindanaon musical instrument kutyapi died a year ago. I was not able to watch his performance at Conspiracy. I was not even present for meet and greet nor get togethers but TODAY, on the ocassion of his first death anniversary, I AM ATTENDING!

The National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will launch TODAY “Mamayog: the Music of Samaon Sulaiman” at the NCCA Tanghalang Leandro V. Locsin. They say this is "a set of audio recordings and a 300-page book containing transcriptions of these recordings and a monograph about the Maguindanaon kutyapi, published by the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Secretariat."

But my 6-year old son asked me, "Mum,what is kutyapi? To which I answered, " yun nakasabit sa bahay nila Tito RMI sa Antipolo..Papa and I used to strum it hijo depende kung anong mood mo, anak." Then I asked him, "Teka, haven't you seen Tito Diwa and Manong Joey strum it, have you?"..

THIS IS one of the many KUTYAPI!

The kutyapi is a two-stringed plucked lute made of wood, one string for the melody, one for the drone. Eight frets originally held in place placed on the neck of the lute by a sticky rubbery substance, propolis, produced by honey bees to repair damages and openings in the hive. The lute is decorated with floral motives; the tail is carved to represent a stylised crocodile head. And is one of the most technically demanding and difficult to master among Filipino musical instruments. Usually the size would be in dimensions: length: 152 cm., width: 11,5 cm.

The instrument is common to the Ethnic group Maranao located at the West Central Mindanao (muslim south). Similar instruments are played as:

-kudyapi (Tagbanua )
- Kutyapi, Kutiapi (Maguindanaon),
-Kotyapi (Maranao),
-Kotapi (Subanon),
-Fegereng (Tiruray),
-Faglong, Fuglung,kudlung, SE Mindanao
-Kudyapi (Bukidnon and Tagbanua),
-Hegelong (T’boli)
-Kuglong, Kadlong, Kudlong or Kudlung (Manobo, Mansaka, Mandaya, Bagobo and Central Mindanao)
-Kusyapi (Palawan)

And then there's Manong Joey Ayala and Conspiracy.

But when you are a purist like me, I like to meet a T'Boli, Manobo and other Lumad groups, Bagobo, the Maguindanao and Maranao, or then again, maybe, an ethnicity in you?

And if you ask me what the link is? It's all about Pilipino Pride and HERITAGE!

As A FAN and a friend of Diwa de Leon, who is part of Makiling Ensemble, he plays the hegalong with modernity and gusto! He is the son of Dr. Felipe de Leon who I first met at Diwa's birthday celebration and as a "Tito" he once gave me an advice re my dedication to Prof. Edru Abraham's Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (Kontra-GaPi).

Going back to kutyapi, which I consider Pilipino Pride and HERITAGE, let me share parts of Dr. de Leon's interview from http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/7929/master-of-filipino-2-string-lute-dies ...

“With his creative gifts in enriching the playing techniques, styles, sonic and melodic repertoire of the instrument, [Sulaiman’s] crowd-drawing performances here and in foreign lands, and his dedication in imparting his skills to the Maguindanaon youth, he has immensely enhanced the appreciation of his chosen instrument and contributed in no small measure to the strengthening of Filipino musical heritage,” the NCCA said in a statement.

NCCA Chair Felipe de Leon Jr. said Samaon was “a great loss to the country.”

“He was truly one of the shining lights in the non-Western musical heritage of old Philippines. It will be hard to develop another one like him,” De Leon said.

By the way, check http://www.ncca.gov.ph/aboutncca/announcements/announcement.php?i=5868 for the memorabilia exhibit for National Artist Felipe Padilla de Leon -Tito, Sinag and Diwa's roots....

ESPASYO, SOUND ART and CENTELLA ETHEREA: MY CELESTIAL SPHERES!

Do you know how my so called selective amnesia works?

I never knew the exact stories nor asked details about it. But as a FAN and a friend, I knew them both because we would do open jams during SOUND ART FESTIVALS. From the defunct Surrounded by Water in Ortigas to Tado's bday at Cubao, to an art gallery at Kalayaan QC and to UP AIT in Diliman.

Oh, and yes, to my Mecca- Khavn Dela Cruz's Oracafe! It was a hit hub during the 9O's. And when I created Gooda Garam Productions with mah husband and friend Claring, I asked Elemento to perform there too with the list you see on this ticket/poster. Good thing this was captured by Beybeh Beybeh's vocalist and now Master/ Yogist Leif Losinio.

I remember Khavn, in his most humble and coolest way approved of the idea but was worried about the stage's gigantic mirror. I wrapped it with Manila Paper so that "the" Lirio Salvador, Elemento's frontman, could paint while performing ( SOUND ART nga eh!). And when a stroke hit the mirror surface, Lirio, after the performance just assured him " Pare, water based naman yan." Peace Khavn! And Opo, Kinuskos ko ang buong salamin at hindi yung nalampasan lang!

Then where else? What other links? Aha, McDo Philcoa french fries, then Chaitanya chanting and Japa Beads, then after 13 years French Fries again with Savor the Now education at Bside, then my no appearance at their Album Launch, then his Hit and Run Survival. They have survived MORTALITY's challenge!

Today, I would be firmer in supporting their Gallery- ESPASYO. I never knew it was theirs. I was sooo pre occupied with the BPO industry ( but not anymore because I'm into Cultural works now, yipee!) that I never cared what's happening in the SOUND ART SCENE and that they do EXIST . I told Jon and Mean recently," Tara BUHAYIN natin ang ESPASYO....."

Fortunately, my passion was indeed re-affirmed because my stint with Centella Etherea proved I was a PIONEER of the SOUND ART too. Those were days with Roger, Earl, and NC. Don't you dare say I wasn't. Hoy nasa PULP kami!!! See this man!

And yep, more than the GOTH Buzz nights, our vocalist, Francis Reyes is back in Manila for a short stay. He is spreading the "scene" at Brooklyn for so many years now with his band Dinner and Dinuguan. If I would be a spoiler, I'd say, " Francia, kami na lang ang Dinuguan with Puto kapag European Tour na niyo!"

Going back,I would like to share Mary Ann Jimenez-Salvador's post for the 26th..

Espasyo Siningdikato creatiVEnue
celebrates 3rd Anniversary

The Espasyo Siningdikato creatiVEnue will be celebrating its 3rd year anniversary on May 26, 2012, 6pm – onwards at the Espasyo office located at Congressional Road, Brgy. Sta. Fe, Dasmariñas City.

For the last three years, Espasyo Siningdikato creatiVEnue has been served as an abode for the creative souls. It has become an alternative venue that showcases artistic output, allows exchange of ideas and provides opportunity to learn art. By implementing various projects, activities and events with local and international flavors, Espasyo has also been helping in bridging the gap between the artists and local community. Moreover, it has also been functioning as an umbrella organization that gathers selected artistic groups in Cavite such as Tanghalang Pascual Poblete, Grupo Ocho, Cavite Young Writers Association, De La Salle Filipiniana Dance Company, Papermonster Press, and a group of Graffiti artists.

Since its establishment in 2009, Espasyo Siningdikato has organized a total of 28 visual art exhibitions, an international symposium and music festival, a city-wide children’s art workshops, several art lectures and hands-on workshops, and three (3) theme-based national art and environmental festivals. Three of its members represented the group in National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ national and regional art fora. It has also forged membership and linkages with several educational institutions as well as government and non-governmental organizations.

Espasyo’s advocacy to propagate art in the community continued with this year’s theme “Sibol: Pag-usbong ng bagong sandata”. The theme focuses in honing and nurturing new breed of artists who will become weapons for the cultural empowerment of their respective community. At the end of the year, Espasyo hopes to accomplish two flagship projects: the NCCA sponsored “Punla-Sining: After School Scholarship Program for the Underprivileged Children of Barangay Sta. Fe and San Nicolas in Dasmariñas City” and “Outsider Artists Exhibition Assistantship Program.” Espasyo, through its founder Lirio Salvador, an avant garde artist/musician also aims to inspire other artists to continuously develop their artistry by creating innovative art works, exploring other artistic possibilities and sharing knowledge and creativity.

Highlights of this year’s celebration include: EXIST Homecoming: a sound art exhibition; performance art by Danny Sillada, Vim Nadera, Irma Lacorte, TUPADA and Tadtaran Duo; poetry reading by Papermonster Press and Cavite Young Writers Association; contemporary moves by Tanghalang Pascual Poblete; Poi Dance by Art Ayson and musical performances by Espasyo in-house musicians which include Lakbay-Lahi, Elemento, Ferrond, Gentle Universe, and Cosmopolitan Smoke Stab. A special section will be dedicated to 3yRs. It features a photo exhibit of Espasyo people and events in the past. The group will also be launching a compilation of three-minute limited edition sound art/audio collage in CD format. Art raffle will also be drawn during the event.

The event is free.

For inquiries, please contact Mary Ann (0927-308-4130), Jonjie (09054178180) and Stan (09174735480).

I hope I can attend because I may be flying in from Shang for my lolos' bday celebration.

To MeAn and my Tatang Lirio, sige, KAPIT lang ng mahigpit. Hawak kamay...

MABUHAY TAYONG LAHAT!

BAYBAYIN

Here is the BAYBAYIN for Growth in Creativity and Culture schedule for Classes-Workshops, Summer 2012

Schedule starts on April 14, 21, 28. These are 3 Consecutive Saturdays which starts from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the ISIS International, #3 Marunong st., Quezon City

Most of us know it as Alibata. The tattoo fanatics like at my call center job wear theirs in Baybayin and when I see one avail, I tell the jist of BAYBAYIN.

It is the ancient system of reading and writing of the Filipinos. When we search further and assume much, we may claim that history reveals to us that almost all Filipinos, the bragged Indios, could read and write before the Spanish occupation of the Philippines. These Baybayin characters are the connection to my roots. We say, this 3-day workshop is indeed an invitation to affirm one's creativity and to reconnect!

We believe everyone is an artist. We are all creative. No technical skills nor audition pieces. No so Fine Arts. Only the mind set and that openness to be ready to surrender and re-discover to unleash a power. hahaha. Freak on a Leash? Nah, Pilipino unleashed!!!

The Energy exchange (for the 3-day workshop)is at P2900. The early birds rate which runs until March 30 makes it P2500. So, to reserve a slot, only a deposit of P1500 is required. The remaining balance to be paid on April 14.

We also organize Baybayin Workshop for Kids and Teens. I promote this because I have 4 boys, right? But they are not scholars yet. We share and do the energy exchange in our own little ways. The Universe provides for us well. So well, I am one with it.

So, for inquiries & reservations, contact 09152952826 or ilishta@yahoo.com. You can also visit https://www.facebook.com/events/241251812630854/ to join!

Oh by the way, Bathala nawa is not a manyana habit, not just a laid back attitude! It is total surrender to the powerful "BA" for babae "HA" for harmony or breathe and "LA" for lalake. Afterall, we surrender, live, laugh, learn and just BE.

BATHALA na!

ROBOT CHEETAH gallops at 18mph

Two of my son loves Robotics. I encouraged them once to be enrolled in a Chinese or Science school so that they may be supported well for their endeavor but I was not able to find a scholarship for them. I guess any school would suffice as long as my children still have that flame in them to someday build a Robot than a clone!

This vid is what I saw from a friend's post in Google Plus. And so I thought to myself- What a Scientific World!!

Run Cheetah Robot run, er, gallop!

Shilo Shiv Suleman: 7 minutes of Creativity!

It is during my lunch break that I either go to the Gym inside the office or if not I watch TED TALKS at YouTube.com.

This one amazes me! Indeed it is STILL MAGICAL!!!

Shilo is on great storyteller. She was able to find a way to integrate her childhood visions with technology. The question about dreaming, aspiring and how to use it with this generation's media-our cell phones, tablets, iPods and cameras -- has really not stopped each and everyone of us from dreaming! In TEDTalks, which I viewed from YouTube.com, Shilo Shiv Suleman displays NO for an answer. She demonstrates "Khoya" her new storybook for iPad.

The new MAGIC- integrate creativity by all means!

As small as it may seem, but with its sound, it creates my massive scream- that to me is a macro effect!

And as I beat and pound my native drum, I am able to reflect - that to me is a mirror effect!

Tambulan na naman sa UP Theater on Feb 24 2012

Valentine's Day

What is Valentine's Day?

I told my 4 son it started when certain MARTYRS (yeah martyrs!!) who were in prison were called Valentines. One of them started to create a card before the day of his execution. A card of which no one has real recollection, research nor design about it but it said "From your Valentine". But the moral is, it was this man's effort that started all the THOUGHTFUL tradition we celebrate every 14th of February. Thank YOU!

My Valentine's Day celebration is totally different this 2012 because it was only yesterday that I managed to accept what LOVE may be. I had a heated argument with someone and it was caught on video. Wow! Talk about LOVE!

My Valentine's Day was also spent at WORK! Yup, It was a way of the Universe saying, maybe, just maybe , this time it is WORK and this life giving duty that I must LEARN to LOVE and be loyal to.

And lastly, this was a different celebration because my kids gave me a Valentine's Day artwork and it said, "Salamat Mama sinama mo kami sa 10A Alabama with Tita Aze!" ( Thank you Mama because we were able to be with you during Tita Aze's Opening Exhibit at 10A Alabama)

But wait, it did not stop there yesterday! I told them so many things about how they came to be my children!

Happy renewed Valentine's Day!

Diwa de Leon & The Hegalong

My 3 boys and I attended #Liwanag Opening Exhibit at #10a Alabama yesterday. I was playing the CD of #Intermedya, Bobby's and Makiling. Then another artist approached me and said that's my brother's music. I wasthinking hardwhichone. She said she was #Sinag de Leon, Diwa's Sister!Oh my she is The #Sinag De Leon and I love her Papercuts!

You see, when I attend exhibits, it was just for the artwork, not the artist and the life! BUT after all that 2011 has given me, I'm prouder to admit that I attend not just because of the artwork but because I am a friend and part of the circle. Yesterday was for #Aze and her artworks, a little poetry and drumming. Then energies meet and there was PURE synergy to it. Like minds gathered. Shared experiences abound!

Sinag allowed me to know her. She invited me and handed me the invitation for TODAY,February 12, 2012, 5pm at the Carillon Plaza (Beside UP Theater) in UP Diliman Campus, QC.

This will be a solo concert by no other than Diwa de Leon & the Hegalong. This is an outdoor concert featuring the original music of Diwa which he wrote for the Hegalong.

I told Diwa, I have known you for a while but it was only yesterday that I was able to embrace Sinag! We laughed our hearts out when I said,no more salimpusa for me. I would come today with my family as a FAN. Next as a surrogate Ate.

Come join us too. Enjoy and chillax. Admission is FREE!
