Opening Ceremonies/Kick off Party @ Gweilos Makati, July 21 2009

ASEUM is an international network of new media art practitioners initiated by SABAW Media Art Kitchen (Philippines) and Multimedia Center KIBLA (Slovenia) that aims to become a catalyst for a cultural, educational, and technological exchange on emerging new media art practices in South East Asia with Europe.

ASEUM NEW MEDIA ART FESTIVAL

The symposium initiated with the support of Asia-Europe Foundation will consist of a series of workshops, presentations, performances, video screenings, open-studio sessions, round-table discussions, and policy meetings with cultural foundations by both participating organizations, in an effort to advance artistic positions reflecting on the socio-cultural impacts of new technologies and artistic practices that not only respond to scientific or technical developments, but also try to shape the way in which we think about and experience these technologies.

EAR TO EYE ASEUM FESTIVAL

ASEUM also takes place alongside an electro audio-video performance festival called EAR TO EYE (E2E), 5 nights of rapid electrofringe experimentation on visuals and sound involving VJing, intermedia performances, and electronic music.

TV LOUNGE:
The ASEUM daily program is divided into two parts: the afternoon program where the conference and workshops will be held and the evening program where the round-table discussions and the performances will take place. During the afternoon program, a Lounge will be set up in the respective university and artist-run space venues in our program.

The TV Lounge presents screenings of video documentations, video works, and AVPs from media centers, institutions, artists and collectives from Europe and Asia. Experience it intimately via the TV Lounge where a large TV and headphones are positioned in selected locations during ASEUM. Here, Audio-Video Presentations from our major speakers as well as from other media institutions, artist-run initiatives, artist collectives throughout Europe and Asia will be available for individual viewing.

The ASEUM TV Lounge offers a unique decompression zone at each location. The TV Lounge is also a meeting point for the visitors and artists. Symposium attendees can find more information on other festivals, artist collectives their projects through viewing the videos while sipping coffee, or chatting with fellow visitors. The Lounge is situated in a comfortable setting to accommodate the attendees where refreshments are served. Multiple monitors or projections will be set up in the Lounge playing the videos that are continuously looped to offer the presentation in seamless fashion. Presentations on various related organizations and partners will also be available via brochures and other flyers.

Another unique installment of the Symposium to further experience the multiple nodes and connections that makes up the network of ASEUM

He trained in film and video at the Mowelfund Film Institute and currently designs and mixes sound for digital features and produces video for projection in a variety of stage/concert contexts. He is a media artist and was the sole Filipino artist exhibiting at 20th anniversary of ISEA in 2008 (Main Juried Exhibition) and the Ogaki Biennale 2006 New Media Festival. His single-channel videos are distinguished by an audiovisual sensuousness underpinned by a logic that reflects his training in philosophy and the sciences. Included among these single-channel works are Sausage, The Retrochronological Transfer of Information, and Hulikotekan v. 2.1, the last two of which have been screened at a number of international festivals, including the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival. His facility with a broad range technologies has led to his exploration of computers, programming, and electronics to manipulate sound and video in real time. He also performs audiovisual pieces, both solo and as part of the experimental media group The Children of Cathode Ray.

Jing Garcia: A sound artist and award winning music producer. He established the Children of Cathode Ray backed in 1989, one of the early experimental and sound art groups in the country. Produced several music albums for different alternative music artists in the 90s. He is currently the tech editor for The Manila Times and Speed Magazine. He also hosts a tech segment on the late evening news on TV5.

Malek Lopez: A contemporary composer and graduate of Berklee music school in Boston, Malek studied film scoring but found his real joy to be sound design and synthesis. With a penchant for obscure jazz and lounge Malek is equally at home tearing up the keyboard or guitar but finds his real pleasure in working with sequencers and twiddling knobs. Malek is also probably the most competent synth programmer and sound designer in the country able to quickly translate the ‘sound in your head’ to a sound coming from a keyboard. A further fascination with musical philosophers and modern classical composers often pushes Malek to explore the deeper depths of synthesis and composition.

He has worked professionally with artists and in the field of information technology on both sides of the Pacific—most recently with Dancing Wounded and with Donna Miranda—and has conducted workshops in Canada, Japan, and the Philippines. Diego received his BSc in Computing Science and Contemporary Dance from Simon Fraser University (Canada) in 2005 and received scholarships and academic distinctions during his studies, including a Canadian Information Processing Student of the Year nomination and a 2006 Holy Body Tattoo Emerging Artist for British Columbia Honourable Mention. He was artist-in-residence at Green Papaya Art Projects in Manila in 2008. He currently teaches and develops courses in multimedia at the University of the Philippines Open University.

Lirio Salvador, one of the pioneers of industrial music and music deconstruction in the country (Garcia, 2006) discovers the circuit bending concept in 1986. Unaware of the factual existence of this idea and the technical terms, he developed the possibilities of incorporating this technique in experimenting sound art and made it one of the important ingredients in creating his homemade instrument called Sandata.

Salvador bent and experiment sounds from simple inexpensive toys to pricey ones such as walkie-talkie, transistor radio, mini-amps, electronic toy guns, and toy keyboard. He also map sounds from discarded and newly bought voltage regulator, adaptor, guitar amps, VCD player, karaoke amps, computer and electronic circuit boards. What makes his works unique is that he encases the circuit bent in stainless tube, mixing bowl, tray, casseroles, etc. complete with volume and tone control, and incorporates it in his sculptural musical instrument (see Oddmusic.com) . He also adopted the idea of integrating stray capacitance that makes his work touch sensitive and interactive. Besides, circuit bent and stray capacitance, he also added other sounds like electronic horn, self-composed computer music and audio-CD which make a sound art.

Educated in Fine Arts at the Technological University of the Philippines, Salvador creates artwork that is both appealing to the eyes and feast for the ears. An artwork that can be both a museum piece and musical instrument as well. At present, he is studying electronic and at the same time experiments and explores the ZPE (Zero-Point Energy) concept through the retrieval of electrical energy from vacuum to generate sound from steady electro-magnetic coils found in house-hold appliances. Recently, Salvador was commissioned to make a musical score for an independent film “Rotonda using sound art and his experimental musical instruments. His work was adjudged “Best Musical Score in the 2006 Cinemalaya: Philippine Independent Film Festival held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Tengal is a Manila-based interdisciplinary media artist, composer-musician, curator/producer, and filmmaker working with various mediums. He producers and organizes, as well as participates in various media art related projects in the Philippines and abroad. His work puts the focus on direct experience, risk-taking and personal interaction between artists and audience, and emphasizes the situational potential of live performance, the interplay of various media – sound and image, in particular – and candid exchange between sub-cultural and academic initiatives. He founded SABAW Media Art Kitchen – a not-for-profit, artist-run umbrella network and platform for all kinds of information and communication carried via modern electronic media focused specially in the region of South East Asia.

Visual Pond Artspace, Inc.

is a non-profit organization committed to the visual arts. Based in Manila, Visual Pond aims to be a dynamic player in the Philippine contemporary art scene through projects that engage and promote local artists both here and abroad.
We at Visual Pond envision a contemporary art scene that is vibrant, open to experimentation and supported by the community. By taking initiatives and creating opportunities for Filipino artists, we work towards this realization for the visual arts locale.

Aside from Manila-based projects, we are also interested in regional and international exchanges on ideas, concepts and possible collaborations with definite end products.

Mannet Villariba: A grand prize winner of the NCCA’s Websining Digital Art competition in 2007. Villariba explores his medium with an enthusiasm for electronics as it relates to the realm of sound and visuals. After a fine arts education, corporate environment, and with a self-confessed anti-synth ideology in his garage-band days, Villariba's exposure on new media led to an advantageous and favorable understanding of these unforeseen forces underlying electronic sound with its mystical, ambient and chaotic appeal, eventually shifting his ideals, which in turn rejuvenates his expression in visual art as well. Interactive visual interpretations of these forces are increasingly the main focus of his work.
He actively participates in various performance art events locally as well as several festivals abroad, such as the Tupada Xing, Wunderspaze, Singapore 2006 / Nippon International Performance Art Festival, Japan, Summer 2007 / Asean Contemporary Art Exchange, Yangon Myanmar, January 2009 / Changwon Art Festival, South Korea, April 2009 / Gwangju International Performance Art Festival, South Korea, May 2009.

Earth Day Jam 2009

What started as a small intimate concert nine years ago is now recognized as the biggest environmental themed concert in the country. Lou Bonnevie in a presscon at Hard Rock Café talked about how “Earth Day Jam” began almost a decade ago. This year, the concert will feature more than 20 musicians and artists such as Cynthia Alexander, Noel Cabangon and Kalayo (formerly Pinikpikan), Barbie Almalbis, Delara (formerly Mojofly), pop sensation Nina, Callalily, Rivermaya, SugarFree, Hale, Rocksteddy, The Dawn, Itchy Worms, Sino Sikat, Julianne, Bembol Rockers, The Bloomfields and many more. The free concert will once again be held today at Tomas Morato Ave. starting at 7 p.m.

Earth Day Jam 2009

It will begin with an astonishing drum ensemble for the “World Drum” that has traveled many countries to represent world peace.

“Earth Day Jam” began nine years ago as a quest of one artist to bring more relevance and meaning to her own career. Lou Bonnevie wanted to use her talent and fame to promote environmental protection. She said, “I don’t want to expose myself for the sake of being famous. There has to be something deeper to it than that. I wanted to use that effort and fame for something I believe in.” Even her current album “Only Human” that was recently launched reflects her convictions. In 2007, Lou was awarded the Fr. Satur Neri Award by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts and UNESCO for the success of “Earth Day Jam.”

EARTH HOUR PHILIPPINES 2009 GOES NATIONWIDE

Filipinos urged to switch off lights 8:30-9:30pm on March 28

The lights will go off one hour on March 28, starting at 8:30 pm in key cities in the Philippines and all over the world. This is called Earth Hour. The lights-out initiative, which began in Sydney in 2007 as a one-city environmental campaign, has evolved into a grassroots that has attracted worldwide attention. In 2008 371 cities across 35 countries turned their lights out in a united call for action on climate change and energy conservation.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in joining hands the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Green Army Philippines Network to spread public awareness of the Earth Hour message to cities and communities all over the country.

2009 is a destiny year for the entire planet, declared Lory Tan, President and CEO of WWF-Philippines. This is the year that we decide the future of humanity. Earth Hour is a message of hope and action and we hope it sends a powerful message to both local and world leaders. It is a global movement that proves that each one of us can make a difference. Imagine what we can do if we act together.

Recognizing the vital role of the energy community- particularly in terms of sustainable electric power generation, clean transport fuels, and best energy practices across sectors â DOE Secretary Angelo T. Reyes expressed full support for Earth Hour. â This grassroots initiative is an opportunity for individuals from all corners of the globe to unite and, in a single voice, make it known that their collective action can correct the precarious trajectory of the planet,â he said. â This is a cause that should unite us as Filipinos and as a citizens of the world.

To build on the powerful symbolic value of Earth Hour, Secretary Reyes explained that top-tier corporate sponsorships by national partners will be linked to initiatives to the SWITCH Movement, the social mobilization platform or multi-sector energy stakeholders spawned by the 2008 Philippines Energy Summit. These initiatives cover community-level switches to efficient lighting; cleaner transport fuels and technologies for jeepneys and tricycles; and area-based renewable energy (RE) groundwork-setting and promotion.

âWe are positioning Earth Hour 2009 among potential national partners not as a one-time event but as window to longer-term involvement in climate change response and sustainable energy programs,â he said.â Through this alignment with SWITCH, we have the opportunity to use the switch-off as a springboard to highlight the urgent for dramatic lifestyle changes and best energy practices to save our planet.â

We fully support Earth Hour 2009. And urge companies, non-governmental organizations and communities in our network to take advantage of this opportunity to promote more efficient energy practices and technologies,â remarked Francis Chua, Chairman of the Green Army.

Last year, Earth Hour savings of 56 MWH of electric power in Luzon and 16 MWH in Metro Manila, equivalent to the output of a small coal-fired power plant. An estimated one million Filipinos were involved. Over 400 establishments participated by turning off their signs and non-essential lights. In Manila, Roxas Boulevard became the focal point of the celebration since it cuts across the cities of Manila, Pasay, and Paranaque, but Quezon City, Makati, and Mandaluyong also joined in the energy efficiency-promoting activity.

Earth Hour 2009 aims to reach one billion people in 1,000 cities all over the world. To help reach this goal, a global sign-up campaign and competition is again being launched worldwide. Last year, the Philippines ranked 9 th in terms of total sign-ups. All Filipinos are urged to sign up at Earth Hourâs global website: Earth Hour Philippines 2009 hopes to involve 10 million Filipinos and 500 businesses in key cities across the country.

To receive news updates and event schedules, one can register oneâs cellphone number by sending the following message to 5777 for both Smart and Globe users: green reg firstname lastname. Example: green reg Juan/C/De la Cruz.

WWF, the DOE, the Green Army, and the SWITCH movement are inviting all public and private sector groups to take part in this yearâs Earth Hour. âEfficiency in energy use in the light of global warming is as issue that cuts across all sectors,â Sec. Reyes stressed. He pointed out recent developments in the energy sector such as the passage of the Renewal Energy Act that should facilitate a shift to âgreenâ energy technologies. "This should encourage power companies to now use the wind, the sun, and the ocean waves to generate our electricity."

Though Earth Hour 2009, we hope to send a powerful message to world leaders in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference Copenhagen 2009,â WWFâs Lory Tan said. âWe need a commitment to actions that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the short- and long term benefit of the planet in order to avert widespread disastrous impacts, especially in developing countries like the Philippines.

  • Boyet Fajardo Scandal

    Surveillance camera caught Boyet Fajardo

On Sept. 1, 1980, he opened his first shop on Banaue street in Quezon City as a bid to join the big names in the made-to-order industry at 17 and a college sophomore (at UST, where he was majoring in Fine Arts). Boyet Fajardo believed that he had what it takes to make it in fashion alongside the more established names like Ben Farrales.

    Boyet Fajardo

Today, Boyet is one of the biggest names in RTW. His Boyet Fajardo line is carried in all Robinsons stores—there are about 20 of them all over Metro Manila and in the provinces—and the Landmark. Since making the big shift from couture clothes to RTW

Boyet Fajardo can truly be called a success. He has become both an artistic and financial success. In fact, he recently had his new office-cum-residence located in Valle Verde, officially blessed. The house, which has a large garden, is doted with Boyet’a favorite antiques and paintings. He also recently bought a house in nearby Acropolis, which was blessed on Nov. 28, a blessing that was attended by many of Boyet’s longtime clients and friends.

He has truly come a long way…..

Well that is how he was, till we came across and saw how far his success has made him.

    Boyet Fajardo

    Eye Witness Account-

Last March 13, 2009—or Friday the 13th—we went with our Tatay Rey (who just arrived from Abu Dhabi as OFW a day before) to Duty Free Philippines Fiesta Mall in Parañaque to shop and point. Or we point and he’ll buy…hehehe:)

While waiting in line at the cashiers to pay our goodies…we saw a customer at the top of his voice berating the cashiers and managers of Duty Free... From what my sister told me, it was about a credit card purchase that the cashier was kindly asking for the irate customer's ID to vouch for the legit owner of the credit card which was also “unsigned”—a normal operating procedure to avoid misuse.

He might have thought a celebrated person like he is with all his accolades and fame had gone unrecognized by this cashier person who was doing the job he was trained to do. Tsk tsk tsk…

While Store Managers and officers were sought to appease the matter, explaining to him that it is standard operating procedure in credit card safety, not only for the company but also his own.

Ignoring this, he pulled out his phone and threatened to call high positioned people whom he allegedly knew, to make these people realize how important he is.. he went on using words like “LECHE KAYO, DI NYO KO KILALA? AKO SI BOYET FAJARDO! AT ITONG P..I.. NA BABAENG ITO, (pointing to a lady officer) AT ANG BAKLANG ITO (pointing to the cashier) AY WALANG KWENTANG MGA TAO! I WANT THEM FIRED!!!

His yelling and berating went on and on, he could not calm down and went on to say, that only if the cashier would kneel down before him and/or allow him to freely slap the persons face, would he get satisfied.

AND, you know what happened next...the poor cashier simply gave in, crying in shame. He knelt down and apologized before this self proclaimed GOD….

    Rest well ELY BUENDIA

The Eraserheads concert pushed through at the Fort Open Field this Saturday Aug 30 2008 but was cut short which left 2 more sets and more fun songs unsung.I,too,am requested for a deep good bed rest, left at home, while family and friends still headed to see the one time big time Pinoy concert of the Year. As what they've experienced, aside from loosing the Vans wallet thick chain, confidently left to the MEANEST and POOR APS Security Team of the event, almost 60,000 fans gathered ,some also lost a lot of items supposedly deposited to that APS plastic bag care, even colognes and lotions were confiscated. But almost everybody of that 60,000 fans gathered, was just there in the NOW and listened to the songs down memory lane.

Video walls and white screens at the field allowed fans to see close ups and be part of the countdown.

It begun to flash the pictures of the band way back the 90's. "Alapaap",with the bass intro mode raised the platform where Ely,Markus,Buddy and Raimund had their grand entrance. Fireworks were from the front then from above which worried people if it was good for Ely's health.

At the kick off,Only Markus was wearing his plaid well known Eheads japorms!
Buddy was in white, as Ely was, but he ended just in a red shirt.Although Raimund was in Black and wearing a wig,he,too, eventually, settled for his do,gothic eyelines, and was in a Nike shirt.

    Ely Buendia - Eraserheads

Ely remained in white with an aviator shades until he shook his head to sing "Shake yer head".Or was it the first sign of stress?

All throughout the singing ,with no shades in his eyes, you would witness his innocence, gentleness or maybe he was indeed already feeling weak .

But that did not caught the attention of the crowd.

What then did? The aerial camera caught on screen pretty girls banging their heads for every song they sing or in Dianne's case, Ely's partner, close ups for raising her arms while in her red dress and pearls. Hmmm come to think about it,Ely even changed the first line of Toyang's Too Young" to "They tried, they really tried to tell us we're too old.Too old to really be Bold."But later still went on singing "Mahal ko si Toyang pagkat siya'y simple lamang..."

Intrigued? Lips are sealed if Toyang did watch the concert. Moving forward, the VIP section had fellow musicians, artists and even showbiz personalities. The Patron,as well as those in General Admission wanted to push down the bars that divided the field but to no avail. It was from the Patron group where the "group hug" cheering started which made Ely grin as a "ngising aso" before singing Light Years. Then,Elly may he've lost his balance, went down, half kneeling ,embracing his guitar. Some thought it was emotional tears from the passing away of his mother just this Thursday.

Then the lights went out of the stage and the watch begun to tick for BREAK!
Close to a 30 minute break,Buddy,Markus and Raimund introduced, Ely's sister, Lally, by saying, "Kasama namin si Lally ang kapatid ni Ely.Makinig kayong mabuti.Alam naming makakaintindi kayong lahat." And so the physical and emotional stress Ely is going through has been understood. No more Details ,which was supposed to be mentioned by the Promoter,as what Raimund said, was heard. But a request to pray for Ely's recovery was the most important thing that came out from the organizers.
Will there be a part two of the reunion?

For the Eheads much probably. Check out the posts and video c/o Mark Escueta and Quark Henares in Philmusic.com for their Saguijo jamming. But for the stage, that should be, again, included in our prayers.

Rest and Get well soon to us all.Keep rockin'
