ASEUM International New Media Art Festival

Opening Ceremonies/Kick off Party @ Gweilos Makati, July 21 2009

ASEUM is an international network of new media art practitioners initiated by SABAW Media Art Kitchen (Philippines) and Multimedia Center KIBLA (Slovenia) that aims to become a catalyst for a cultural, educational, and technological exchange on emerging new media art practices in South East Asia with Europe.

ASEUM NEW MEDIA ART FESTIVAL

The symposium initiated with the support of Asia-Europe Foundation will consist of a series of workshops, presentations, performances, video screenings, open-studio sessions, round-table discussions, and policy meetings with cultural foundations by both participating organizations, in an effort to advance artistic positions reflecting on the socio-cultural impacts of new technologies and artistic practices that not only respond to scientific or technical developments, but also try to shape the way in which we think about and experience these technologies.

EAR TO EYE ASEUM FESTIVAL

ASEUM also takes place alongside an electro audio-video performance festival called EAR TO EYE (E2E), 5 nights of rapid electrofringe experimentation on visuals and sound involving VJing, intermedia performances, and electronic music.

TV LOUNGE:
The ASEUM daily program is divided into two parts: the afternoon program where the conference and workshops will be held and the evening program where the round-table discussions and the performances will take place. During the afternoon program, a Lounge will be set up in the respective university and artist-run space venues in our program.

The TV Lounge presents screenings of video documentations, video works, and AVPs from media centers, institutions, artists and collectives from Europe and Asia. Experience it intimately via the TV Lounge where a large TV and headphones are positioned in selected locations during ASEUM. Here, Audio-Video Presentations from our major speakers as well as from other media institutions, artist-run initiatives, artist collectives throughout Europe and Asia will be available for individual viewing.

The ASEUM TV Lounge offers a unique decompression zone at each location. The TV Lounge is also a meeting point for the visitors and artists. Symposium attendees can find more information on other festivals, artist collectives their projects through viewing the videos while sipping coffee, or chatting with fellow visitors. The Lounge is situated in a comfortable setting to accommodate the attendees where refreshments are served. Multiple monitors or projections will be set up in the Lounge playing the videos that are continuously looped to offer the presentation in seamless fashion. Presentations on various related organizations and partners will also be available via brochures and other flyers.

Another unique installment of the Symposium to further experience the multiple nodes and connections that makes up the network of ASEUM

His single-channel videos are distinguished by an audiovisual sensuousness underpinned by a logic that reflects his training in philosophy and the sciences. Included among these single-channel works are Sausage, The Retrochronological Transfer of Information, and Hulikotekan v. 2.1, the last two of which have been screened at a number of international festivals, including the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival. He also hosts a tech segment on the late evening news on TV5.

Malek Lopez: A contemporary composer and graduate of Berklee music school in Boston, Malek studied film scoring but found his real joy to be sound design and synthesis. With a penchant for obscure jazz and lounge Malek is equally at home tearing up the keyboard or guitar but finds his real pleasure in working with sequencers and twiddling knobs. Malek is also probably the most competent synth programmer and sound designer in the country able to quickly translate the ‘sound in your head’ to a sound coming from a keyboard. A further fascination with musical philosophers and modern classical composers often pushes Malek to explore the deeper depths of synthesis and composition.

Lirio Salvador, one of the pioneers of industrial music and music deconstruction in the country (Garcia, 2006) discovers the circuit bending concept in 1986. Unaware of the factual existence of this idea and the technical terms, he developed the possibilities of incorporating this technique in experimenting sound art and made it one of the important ingredients in creating his homemade instrument called Sandata.

Salvador bent and experiment sounds from simple inexpensive toys to pricey ones such as walkie-talkie, transistor radio, mini-amps, electronic toy guns, and toy keyboard. He also map sounds from discarded and newly bought voltage regulator, adaptor, guitar amps, VCD player, karaoke amps, computer and electronic circuit boards. What makes his works unique is that he encases the circuit bent in stainless tube, mixing bowl, tray, casseroles, etc. complete with volume and tone control, and incorporates it in his sculptural musical instrument (see Oddmusic.com) . He also adopted the idea of integrating stray capacitance that makes his work touch sensitive and interactive. Besides, circuit bent and stray capacitance, he also added other sounds like electronic horn, self-composed computer music and audio-CD which make a sound art.

Educated in Fine Arts at the Technological University of the Philippines, Salvador creates artwork that is both appealing to the eyes and feast for the ears. An artwork that can be both a museum piece and musical instrument as well. At present, he is studying electronic and at the same time experiments and explores the ZPE (Zero-Point Energy) concept through the retrieval of electrical energy from vacuum to generate sound from steady electro-magnetic coils found in house-hold appliances. Recently, Salvador was commissioned to make a musical score for an independent film “Rotonda using sound art and his experimental musical instruments. His work was adjudged “Best Musical Score in the 2006 Cinemalaya: Philippine Independent Film Festival held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Visual Pond Artspace, Inc.

is a non-profit organization committed to the visual arts. Based in Manila, Visual Pond aims to be a dynamic player in the Philippine contemporary art scene through projects that engage and promote local artists both here and abroad.
We at Visual Pond envision a contemporary art scene that is vibrant, open to experimentation and supported by the community. By taking initiatives and creating opportunities for Filipino artists, we work towards this realization for the visual arts locale.

Aside from Manila-based projects, we are also interested in regional and international exchanges on ideas, concepts and possible collaborations with definite end products.

Mannet Villariba: A grand prize winner of the NCCA’s Websining Digital Art competition in 2007. Villariba explores his medium with an enthusiasm for electronics as it relates to the realm of sound and visuals. After a fine arts education, corporate environment, and with a self-confessed anti-synth ideology in his garage-band days, Villariba's exposure on new media led to an advantageous and favorable understanding of these unforeseen forces underlying electronic sound with its mystical, ambient and chaotic appeal, eventually shifting his ideals, which in turn rejuvenates his expression in visual art as well. Interactive visual interpretations of these forces are increasingly the main focus of his work.
He actively participates in various performance art events locally as well as several festivals abroad, such as the Tupada Xing, Wunderspaze, Singapore 2006 / Nippon International Performance Art Festival, Japan, Summer 2007 / Asean Contemporary Art Exchange, Yangon Myanmar, January 2009 / Changwon Art Festival, South Korea, April 2009 / Gwangju International Performance Art Festival, South Korea, May 2009.
